The SAMNet Browser

The SAMNet Browser is your gateway to all of the news, books, radio, videos, tv shows, podcasts and information the world has to offer. With just a few commands listed below, you can read your local news, get the latest sports scores, get your weather forecast for the next seven days, and access all of the information of interest to you. And as your skills and confidence increase, you will soon be shopping online, paying bills, reading books, listening to music, watching tv shows, and so much more.

If you haven't done so yet, start SAMNet by pressing "Control+Alt+N", or press enter on the icon on your desktop labeled "System Access Mobile Network". Likewise, if you are using the System Access screen reader, you may launch the desktop by pressing "Modifier+D".

To open, or go to a web site, press either "Control+L" as in Location, or "Control+O" as in Open, and type the address of the web site. for example, to go to the SeroTalk.com web site with the latest news of interest to those who are blind, or have low vision, press "Control+L" immediately followed by www.serotalk.com

Once on a web page, it will automatically begin reading the relevant text. You can then use the following commands to navigate: To go to the next link, press "Tab". To go to theprevious link, press "Shift+Tab". To go to the top or beginning of the page, press "Control+Home". To go to the end or the bottom of the page, press "Control+End". To go to the first non-linked text, usually the most relevant information on a web page, press "N", as in non-linked. To select an item in a list box, press "Alt+down Arro". Once you have made your selection, press enter to close the list, and press tab or down arrow for the next option. to view a history of web sites you have previously visited, press "Control+Shift+O", or to view web sites previously visited in a separate, or new window, press "control+Shift=N".

Finding Text

To find a specific word or link on a page, press "Control+F". Type the word or string you want to find, then press enter. Your cursor will be place on that word, or link, if found. If the page doesn't contain what you are looking for, you will hear the message "not found," press enter and try again. Searches start from your current position, To make sure you are searching the entire page, first press "Control+Home" to go to the top of the page, then press "Control+F" and type in your text, followed by enter.

Headings

Web pages use six different headings, labeled H1 through H6. H1 shows text in the largest font and is usually used for titles. H2 is smaller, and h3 smaller yet. H2 and H3 are usually used to distinguish topics and categories. H6 is very tiny and fortunately seldom-used. You can jump to specific headings by pressing the appropriate number, 1 through 6. This is very helpful on news sites like The New York Times. You can also move in reverse by headings by pressing shift+1 through shift+6 to move to the previous H1 through H6 heading respectively. Results will very between web sites. Likewise, you can simply press "H" to go to the next heading, and press shift+H to go to the previous heading, regardless of the type of heading.

Tables, forms and buttons

Most sites use tables to group together similar types of information. To go to the next table, press "T". To go to the previous table, press "Shift+T". To go to the next form field, press "F". This is most useful for quickly jumping to an edit box to type in something to search for on the web site, or to enter login information. to go to the previous form field, press "Shift+F". Many sites use buttons to activate searches, log in, or to start playing audio or video. To go to the next button, press "B". For the previous button, press "Shift+B". One way to navigate pages with multiple links is to create a links list. To do this, press "Modifier+F7". Then just press the "Down Arrow" key to see only the links you can go to for additional resources.

Bookmarks

Any time you find a web site you like, and plan to return to it in the future, add it to your bookmarks. This is accomplished by pressing "Alt+Shift+B", as in bookmar. You then get a dialog showing the title that will be given to this bookmark. If you are happy with this, press enter. for additional options, you may edit this title. then press tab to hear the address, pressing tab again lands you on a checkbox to make this link available to the public. This is unchecked by default. Press spacebar to check this if you want to share this resource with other SAMNet users. Pressing tab again, gives you the chance to add a description or comment to help you remember why you bookmarked this site in the first place. Then pressing tab again lands you on the add button, press either spacebar or enter to activate. To return to your bookmmarks, press "Alt+B". You will land on the option labeled browse bookmarks. This will take you to only those bookmarks you have created. The option labeled "browse public bookmarks" will let you browse bookmarks from other SAMNet users, listed alphabetically by username. You can also manage bookmarks, import bookmarks from another browser, and export bookmarks to another browser. When you are finished with bookmarks, , press "Escape".
