Changing SAMNet Preferences

Note that this section doesn't apply to those using free System Access to Go accounts.

SAMNet allows you to customize your preferred way of interacting with it, and then save those preferences so that it will always respond the same way when you log on.

To access, and change SA Mobile Network Preferences, simply press alt+P from anywhere within SAMNet, or press Modifier+f, and press down arrow until you hear the word preferences, and press enter. If you are using a mouse, you may access the preferences by clicking the Preferences button, near the top of the browser window. Many of the preferences are controlled through check boxes, which you can turn on or off by pressing the space bar.

The Preferences Window

The Preferences Window consists of the following categories:

  1. General Preferences.
  2. Text-to-speech preferences.
  3. Screen Magnification Preferences
  4. Password Manager
  5. Startup Preferences
  6. Manage my HomeServer.
  7. Sync Preferences.

The last option is a link that closes the preferences window, or press Escape from anywhere.

General Preferences

Key Echo

If this option is turned on, the browser echoes any letters, and or numbers that you type, but it will not echo sensitive information such as passwords.

Word Echo

If this option is turned on, the browser will echo words that you type, when you press the space bar, enter, tab or shift+tab keys.

Link Alert Type

This setting allows you to specify how you want links to be indicated, while you are listening to a page read continually. By default, links will be indicated by a tone. The indicator will be heard before the actual text of the link is spoken. You can also have links indicated by word, by selecting "Word" from the drop down list box. If you do not wish to here any link indicator, just select, "None" from the drop down list box. By selecting none, you will not hear any textual, or auditory alert before the name of the link itself. As a result, it may be somewhat difficult to accurately determine when links are present. Note, if you are arrowing through the page, or tabbing/shift+tabbing through the page, the alert indicator will not be used, regardless of the setting you choose. The setting is only applicable while continually reading through a page when using the modifier+downarrow command.

Simplified user interface

Checking this option will allow the SA browser to display most items in a simple list. So when you are on the SA mobile network home page, press the letter W to jump directly to the weather center page. If more than one item starts with a letter, then you will need to type that letter two or more times to get what you want. If you wanted to get to the entertainment guide, press the letter E two times, followed by pressing the enter key.

Make System Access Mobile The Default Browser

Activating this button with the spacebar, or enter key will allow you to make the SAMobile browser come up automatically without doing anything first. For example when you activate a link from within an email message, the SAMobile browser will start reading the web page. If you want this to happen, then activate the button with the spacebar, and you will hear a confirmation message. Press the spacebar again to acknowledge that you have heard the message.

Text-To-Speech Preferences

This setting lets you choose your primary speech engine. Use alt+Down arrow to open the list box. The choices are: NeoSpeech VoiceText, ETI Eloquence, DecTalk U.S., RealSpeak Solo, Microsoft speech API 5, and possibly Microsoft Speech API 4 if you have voices for that installed. Note that you will only have NeoSpeech VoiceText, ETI Eloquence, or RealSpeak Solo voices if you have purchased them from Serotek. Use your up, and down arrow keys to move through these choices. When you arrow to the one you want. Press tab and use the up and down arrow keys to choose your preferred voice. When you hear the voice you want, press tab to set the reading speed.

Voice Rate

You can also control the rate of speech. The buttons, faster and Slower, will do this for you. Just move to the button, and press it with the space bar. You will hear, "This is a test of your speech settings." each time the buttons are pressed.

Voice Pitch Control

Pitch control will let you change the pitch of speech. Again, you have two buttons, higher, for higher pitch, and lower, for lower pitch. Again, each time you press the buttons, you will hear, "This is a test of your speech settings."

Punctuation

You can also control the punctuation that is spoken. To do this, move to the Punctuation list of choices, and press alt+down to open the list of choices. The punctuation choices are: none, some, most and all. When you have made your selection, tab to the next item in the preferences.

Screen Magnification Preferences

The magnify the screen check box turns on screen magnification if it is checked. Un checking this check box will turn the magnification feature off.

The larger button increases the size of the magnification in .25 increments, while the smaller button decreases the amount of magnification. Values range from 1.5 to 6X.

The invert colors in the magnified image check box will flip the colors. So if you normally have a white background and black text, checking this option will give you the reverse, a black background, and white text.

Browser Display Preferences

Please refer to the separate section on the browser display preferences.

Password Manager

The password manager allows you to delete passwords and account login information for web sites that you have visited, and that require you to login to that web site for identification purposes. For example, if your SA Mobile Network login information is changed, the SA Mobile Network will still remember the old login information. In order to solve this problem, arrow down to the web site that you need to change the account information for, and then tab to the, "Remove Selected Passwords" button. The next time you log in to the web site, such as the SAMNet login page, SA Mobile Network will again ask you how you want it to remember the login information. If you want it to never remember acount information for a web page, and then change your mind, just move to the list box called, "Sites for which passwords are never saved", select the site from the list Then activate the, "Remove selected sites" button.

Startup Preferences

The start System Access when I log onto windows check box will start System Access as soon as you log onto windows, or as soon as the windows logon screen disappears.

The Start a temporary instance of System Access when the Windows Logon screen appears check box allows System Access to speak while the windows log on screen is visible.

Manage My HomeServer

This is not a preference it of itself. However, it is a link that allows you to enable the System Access HomeServer service. The shortcut will allow you to remove the service from your system, or stop the service. Note, when you activate this link, you will be taken to a new page.

Remote Control Preferences

Within the HomeServer page is a link to the preferences for Remote Controlling your home PC. Please refer to the System Access help for more information about this feature.
