From Hagendass To Hotdogs!!

Back again yet again!! Sorry for the various mail things shown below, which I don’t have yet the hang of editing and deleting text properly in a win environment (grin) I shall learn how though, along with all the other learning to come. I’m truly having a soundtastic field day!! (smile)

Hi all!! A very successful first start and new beginning post cochlear implant activation!! Lots of actual speech recognition, lots of environment, and, getting used to determining the difference between those sounds you want to focus on, and what sounds are background and ambient noise. My sister described watching the activation and initial tweaking on screen as like the scene in Close Encounters where they sync the tones, and the mother ship lands, and all the lights flash. When I was getting even the words that I was given randomly, and wasn’t told were coming, I was told you could see the various electrodes firing, when different sound components occur, like consonants, and vowels, and various things. 10 days later, I had today’s appointment, the first of many therapy sessions over the next months. 3 plus hours of testing and more initial tweaks and fine tuning, I actually got 100 percent contextual sentence recognition, and for random open set words, which have no context relationship, I got 56 percent. They say they usually expect someone initially to maybe get 20 percent better on sentences than on random words, but, with my 100 percent on sentences, I got 44 percent better!! I also was able to score responses on all hertz and db ranges tested. The audiologist said oh yes, this will indeed become your dominant ear (smile) When I look back on what I truly expected 10 days ago, I thought, ***Even if there isn’t any initial hearing, please let there be a signal sensation, just to show me a hint that there can be the hope for some physical breakthrough and power. Sure enough, it feels great!! It’s like a straight shot with punch and powerful ummph right to the source and to the brain, without the prior feeling of sounds trying to fight through a physical mush wall. I can use my aid on the left side to give me a slight help along for the newly reborn right implant side, to give me a tweak of a person’s voice characteristics and pronunciation. But I instantly found myself gravitating over to the right, as it immediately kicked to dominate the situation. Lots of mega work ahead, but this last week has been great fun, I’ve had a field day with my initial soundtastic re encounters, of the things I’ve not heard on the right in 25 years, and this has totally way cool all kinds of potential upcoming. Lots of major work sessions ahead, but I’m ready for the adventure!! (smile)
